It seems I can't even be trusted to go out to pick up some bread and not come back with a new petticoat (or pair of shoes).
"You can always return it with the receipt if it doesn't fit" said the lady in the charity shop. "That's OK", it'll probably go straight into her dressing up box.", leaving it open whether said box belonged to a daughter, partner or me. And anyway at just £2, I'll more likely just donate it back.
But it was a keeper. And then I had an unexpected day to myself on Friday while L went to London.
.
I'm definitely channelling my inner 1950s housewife here.
Then, because it been a long time since I had the opportunity, I'm afraid I got a bit carried away.
Probably overdoing the '50s look a bit. Or even forties from the style of the favourite red frock below. This was one of the first dresses I ever bought for myself some 40 years ago, and had been taken in and let out so many times there's almost none of the original stitching left. I love the slight puffed sleeves and flared skirt. I've loved to have worn this to the VE Day anniversary lunch party.
Amazing how a grey wig ages you (or reveals my true age).
I'll keep that one in reserve in case I get invited to the WI. (Who have, to their credit, re-stated that they are open to all women, regardless of why might be on their birth certificate.)
The red/ginger wig below left came from from Lynn, bless her.
And then, sadly, she has to go back in the box until next time.

I told you not to watch too much of that Landon Reid on YouTube and now you've caught the fifties housewife bug lol!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, you look so lovely in those gorgeous frocks and petticoats! Nice legs too, Mrs. And it's true what a GG friend once said to me, that transwomen/CDs/drag queens really make an effort to look good because only they properly appreciate the gorgeous variety that female fashion offers.
Forty years of life out of the same dress is impressive. I see what you mean about the 'grey' wig (it's 'silver', dear!) although the cut suits you well.
Hope it won't be too long before the dressing up box can be opened again.

Thank you Sue.
ReplyDeleteI had another last minute raid on the dressing up box for a green floral dress (https://susie-sometimes.blogspot.com/2024/07/out-and-about-again-annies-and-woodstock.html) but I'd already put the camera away by then.
I wonder if you'll get a free pass, given that - according to the news - Macy folk are not buying bread nowadays. Also, buying from the charity shop recycles, gives them money, and gives you something too. Is that three wins?
ReplyDeleteMay I say you have teamed the petticoat beautifully with your choices of dresses? I felt you looked as if you were off to a garden party or summer event: classy and stylish.
As to grey: on listening to friends, it seems the trick to go silver or take the opportunity to go wild with a wild punk colour. Oh, and Old Ginge looks much better on you. Enjoy. 🩷
L and I went to the VE day anniversary lunch together, so sadly I was unable to sport my 40s style frock. Plus I've not yet mastered pin curls. At the moment our local charity shops are probably making more money on the constant churn of jigsaw puzzles than the original retailers.
DeleteAs an aside, this is the first time I've managed a visible cleavage. The downside is that I've also got some excess flesh around the middle.
Still envious of Landon's frocks. And Brini Maxwell's 50s and 60s outfits.
ReplyDeleteYes, and I'm envious of the slim, youthful figures they put in them lol! Sue x
DeleteEvery photo is lovely. That petticoat is just...😍
ReplyDeleteI remember the feeling of putting myself away in a box. Which is to say: solidarity ✊ But, on the plus side, at least she had some time *out* of the box.
Thank you, Joanne. There a definite art to sitting gracefully with a petticoat which some of early pictures didn't quite manage to convey. Although it may open up a side-line in racy postcards.
ReplyDeleteI love this so much. I totally get the “back in the box” feeling. It’s bittersweet every time. But even if it’s temporary, those moments of expression? They matter. A lot.
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle. Just been reading your latest post. I've also been musing about what items might no longer be suitable for my age (I have a few decades on you) in my most recent post.
